KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Saluki track and field came away with one event victory and another school record on the final day of the Tennessee Sea Ray Relays on Saturday.
Freshman Kyle Landon won his third straight high jump event title in three tries outdoors on Saturday. The Chester, Ill., native came within two inches of his personal best (2.19m/7-02.25, set last week at the EIU Big Blue Classic) with his winning clearance of 2.15m (7-00.25). Dating back to the indoor season, Landon has won the high jump in eight of his first ten collegiate attempts at SIU -- including at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships in March.
The women's 4x800 meter relay squad of Alyssa Allison, Kelley Gallagher, Allison Gallo and Mobola Rotibi broke a 26-year-old school record in the event on Saturday. The team finished third at a time of 8:54.38, which clocks in four seconds better than the previous record of 8:58.70 set in 1988. Allison, Gallagher and Rotibi were also on last season's 4x1600 meter relay team that broke the school record as well (20:06.75).
The Salukis also had a trio of throwers competing in the discus throw invitational events on Saturday. Junior Curtis Wideman finished sixth in the men's invite at 52.39m (171-10), and on the women's side fellow juniors Ashley Gaston (fourth, 49.52m/162-06) and Sophia Lozano (seventh, 37.49m/123-00) represented Southern in the invitational event.
SIU also set new season-bests in three of its four relay events on Saturday. The men's 4x100 meter relay of William Davis, Franklin Adams, Spencer Jackson and Matthew Benes finished seventh at a time of 41.91 seconds. The Saluki women set new 2014 outdoor bests in both the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. In the 4x100, Jessica Jump, Amiris Warren, Allison and Nirupama Sunderraj clocked in at 46.65, and in the 4x400 McKenzie White, Warren, Jump and Sunderraj crossed the finish line at 3:51.72.
Next up for Saluki track and field is the 87th running of the Kansas Relays, which will be held April 16-19 at the brand-new Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan.
