Women's Track and Field first, Men finish third at Indiana State Quadrangular

    TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams won 11 events as the women won the meet and the men took third at the Indiana State Quadrangular Friday and Saturday at Marks Field.

    The Saluki women swept the throws winning all four meet titles finishing with 187 points. Michigan State finished second with 173.5 points, Indiana State finished third with 156.5 and Indiana rounded out the field with 153 points.

    On the men's side, Michigan State won the meet with 199.5 points, followed by Indiana with 185. Southern Illinois (151) and Indiana State (135.5) rounded out the field.

    After winning both the hammer throw and discus throw Friday, the Saluki women took the javelin and shot put titles Saturday. Jeneva McCall won her second meet title, taking the shot put with a toss of 52-07.25 (16.03m). Gwen Berry finished fourth with a mark of 48-05.25 (14.76m).

    Toni Whitfield won the javelin with a career-best throw of 142-04 (43.39m), followed in second by teammate Jessica Vermeulen at 118-02 (36.02m).

    In the jumps, Malaikah Love won the long jump and finished second in the triple jump. The sophomore jumped 19-07.50 (5.98m) in the long and 41-00.25 (13.02m) in the triple. Teammates Nina Okafor finished fourth in the long jump at 18-04.50 (5.60m) and Judeka Adams came in third in the triple jump at 38-06 (11.73m).

    Kasey Oceguera cleared 5-07 (1.70m) in the high jump for third place, and Miracle Thompson finished fifth in the pole vault clearing 11-09 (3.58m).



    Meredith Hayes won the women's 100-meter hurdles in 13.65 and third in the 200-meter dash in 24.97. Lashawn Walker finished sixth in both the 100 hurdles (15.07) and 100 dash in 12.60, and Laquitsha Bejoile finished fifth in the 100 in 12.55 and sixth in the 200 in 24.97.

    The Salukis swept first and second in the 400-meter dash led by Kandise Thompson in 55.20. Tess Shubert finished second in 56.59.

    Megan Hoelscher also finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:10.27.

    On the men's side, Trevor Poore threw a career-best 196-06 (59.90m) in the javelin for the meet title, his mark eighth all-time at SIU. Brad Foote came in eighth at 119-01 (36.29m).

    J.C. Lambert and Ryan Shumaker came in second and third in the shot put, Lambert throwing 54-05.50 (16.60m) and Shumaker, 54-01 (16.48m).

    In the pole vault, Cody Doerflein remained undefeated taking his fourth meet title in as many weeks clearing 17-00 (5.18m). Tim Robberstad finished fourth at 16-00 (4.88m). Kendrick Branch (6-04.75; 1.95m) and Jason Vollmer (6-00.75; 1.85m) finished fifth and eighth respectively.

    In the long and triple jumps, Maxim Bakana finished second and fourth respectively, while Vincent Johnson came in ninth and eighth. Bakana jumped 22-11.25 (6.99m) in the long and 46-09 (14.25m) in the triple, and Johnson jumped 21-04 (6.50m) in the long and 43-03.75 (13.20m) in the triple.

    In the sprints, Brandon Deloney won the 200 in 21.27 and second in the 100 in 10.66. Kalente' Jackson finished sixth in the 100 in 11.03 and Justin Kozak finished sixth in the 200 in 22.52.

    Stephen Arvanis finished third in the 800 in 1:52.99 and Zach Dahleen (3:59.39) and Lucas Cherry (3:59.65) came in seventh and eighth in the 1,500. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Jason Ordway came in fifth in 9:13.64.

    In the men's hurdles, Willie Knox (15.45) and Jeremy Bankston (15.71) finished seventh and ninth in the 110 hurdles.

    The Salukis return to action next weekend at the Drake Relays and the Illinois State Invitational.
