LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Southern Illinois track and field finished its first day at the Kansas Relays with one runner-up and a handful of other high finishers at Day Two of the historic meet on Thursday.
Southern competed in the same four events (800m, 1500m, 5000m, hammer throw) in both women's and men's competition.
The Salukis were led by Bradley Sauer in the men's hammer throw, who fell just short of his first career hammer throw title. Sauer's best throw of 59.20m (194-03) fell three inches shy of champion Issac Twombly of Drake. Also finishing in the top-five were Curtis Wideman (third, 57.31m/188-00) and Brian Cooper (fifth, 55.95/183-07 PR).
On the women's side Southern claimed a top-12 spot in each of the four events. In those top-12 were: Kelley Gallagher (1500 meter run, sixth place, 4:47.27), Kim Fortney (hammer throw, seventh place, 59.03m/193-08), Tori Parry (5000 meter run, tenth place, 18:18.21) and Allison Gallo (800 meter run, 12th place, 2:22.01).
At Day Three the Salukis will begin with the women's 100 meter hurdles at 9:05 a.m.
