Track and Field opens competition at War Eagle Invitational

    AUBURN, Ala. -- The Southern Illinois track and field team opened competition Friday at the War Eagle Invitational taking place on the campus of Auburn University.

    The meet is being held at the Hutsell-Rosen Track and features SEC schools Georgia, Mississippi State, Alabama, and host Auburn. Also competing are Alabama A&M, UAB, Alabama State, Columbia, Columbus State, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, Mercer, Memphis, Shorter, South Alabama, Penn State, Troy, Valdosta State and West Florida. The day began with the men's and women's discus invitational. Freshman Curtis Wideman was the top Saluki finisher placing fifth overall with a toss of 162-07. Senior Brad Foote followed to take sixth place recording a throw of 148.03. Bradley Sauer and Brian Cooper placed seventh and eighth, respectively.

    Jeneva McCall took the title in the women's discus invitational with a winning throw of 182-01. Freshman Ashley Gaston place third with a toss of 152-11. Rickael Roach placed fourth.

    Senior Collin Otto finished in fifth place in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 186-10. Bradley Sauer took the next spot recording a throw of 183-04. Curtis Wideman placed ninth and Brad Foote finished in tenth place.

    In the javelin competition Mallory Dreyer placed tenth with a mark of 120-04.



    The night wrapped up with the women's hammer throw. Jeneva McCall broke her own facility record she set at the 2011 War Eagle Invitational. McCall recorded a throw of 218-07 to win the competition. This is the second time this season McCall has broken a facility record. The senior broke the facility record in the discus throw at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex on March 31.

    Kim Fortney placed second behind McCall in the hammer. She posted a throw of 193-02. Freshman DeAnna Price placed fourth while Rickael Roach finished in sixth.

    Saturday's competition begins at 11 a.m. in the field with the women's pole vault and men's and women's long jump. Events on the track begin at 1 p.m. with the 4x100 meter relay for both the men and women.
