Track and Field concludes competition at War Eagle Invitational

    AUBURN, Ala.-- The Southern Illinois track and field team concluded competition Saturday at the War Eagle Invitational claiming five event titles.

    The Salukis competed Friday and Saturday on the campus of Auburn University competing against some of the top-ranked programs in the country including No.19 host Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, Penn State, and Mississippi State.

    Saturday's competition began with the completion of the field events. Malaikah Love placed eighth in the women's long jump. She recorded a leap of 19-00.50. Former Saluki Bianca Stuart placed second with a jump of 21-04.25 as a member of Team Puma. Nina Okafor placed tenth. Doug Palacious posted a jump of 23-02.00 on the men's side to place seventh. Eric Reeves followed in eighth place.

    Maxim Bakana had a third place finish in the triple jump recording a jump of 48-07.25. Love finished in fifth place for the women with a distance of 40-02.25.

    Cody Doerflein won the men's pole vault competition with a height of 17-04.50. Doerflein currently ranks 16th in the nation in the pole vault.

    After a win the discus invitational and hammer invitational Friday night, Jeneva McCall extended her dominance in the shot put. McCall won the event with a toss of 55-05.75. Kim Fortney followed in second place with a throw of 50-05.25. DeAnna Price and Rickael Roach followed in the three and four spots, respectively.


     

     

    McCall also added to her collection of titles in the discus throw. McCall's distance of 195-00 secured her the win. Freshman DeAnna Price placed second with a throw of 160-07.

    In the men's shot put competition Brian Cooper was the top Saluki finisher placing fifth overall with a mark of 51-11.75. Tyler Clott placed eighth.

    Freshman sprinter Amiris Warren set a personal record in the 200-meter dash placing 13th among 54 competitors with a time of 24.32. Nirupama Sunderajj finished in 28th place with a time of 24.84. On the men's side Ryan Sidwell placed 24th in a field of 49. Blake Green finished 29th.

    Warren also went on to place tenth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.84, Nirupama Sunderajj followed placing 22nd with a time of 12.29. In the 100-meter hurdles Laquitsha Bejoile ran a season best time of 14.62 to place 21st overall. Matthew Benes competed in the 110-meter hurdles posting a personal best time of 11.60 to place 6th. 

    In the 800-meter run Mobola Rotibi placed seventh with a time of 2:14.74. Tess Shubert placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles clocking in at 1:01.43. Evelyn Scott placed 14th with a time of 1:04.32. In the men's 400-meter dash, Blake Green placed 15th with a time of career best time 49.12.

    The women's 4x100 relay team had a season best finish with a time of 46.40 to finish seventh. The men's relay team placed fourth. 

    T.J. Heffernan competed in the men's 1500-meter run placing 9th with a time of 4:00.31. Sarah McIntosh placed fourth for the women in the 1500 with a personal best time of 4:46.43.

    The Saluki track & field team will split up next weekend with athletes competing in both the Drake Relays and the Memphis Tiger Invitational.
