DES MOINES, Iowa -- Southern Illinois track and field completed their first day at the 104th running of the Drake Relays with a record-breaking performance from the women's distance runners on Thursday at Drake Stadium.
The women's 4x1600 meter relay team of Sadie Darnell, Alyssa Allison, Mobola Rotibi and Kelley Gallagher finished seventh but broke the SIU all-time record in the event, clocking in at 20:06.75 -- six seconds better than the previous record set in 2005.
Also competing for the Salukis were the men's 4x1600 meter relay team of Oscar Medina, Lucas Cherry, Juan Carrera and Cole Allison -- who also finished seventh with a time of 17:23.07 -- and sophomore Lacey Gibson, who finished 19th in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:28.72.
The Salukis will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. with the preliminary 4x100 meter relays.
