CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Saluki track and field completed their regular season on Saturday with a solid performance at the Saluki Outdoor Open, a final tuneup before the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships on May 9.

Southern won 18 of the 35 events completed, most nearly if not totally by default. However, the day was not without exceptional performances as 13 different Salukis posted personal bests, including five of those 13 who broke multiple PRs.

Leading SIU at the meet was sophomore thrower Curtis Wideman, who set two PRs in his two victories in the discus and hammer throws. In the discus, Wideman threw a team-best 53.20m (174-06), which moves him up to seventh all-time at Southern Illinois. In the hammer throw he won with his final toss of 61.03m (200-03), breaking his old personal best by nearly a meter.

Ryan Sidwell was also successful in two different event wins for the Salukis. In the pole vault, Sidwell posted a season and career outdoor best clearance of 4.96m (16-03.25), the only athlete to clear a height on the day. Sidwell then turned on the burners in the 400 meter dash, where he clocked a personal best time of 47.98 seconds.

Sophomore Lauren Cheadle also improved her standings in the SIU record books in the long jump. Cheadle bested three other Salukis with her best leap of 5.96m (19-06.75), the tenth-best jump in Saluki history and one half inch better than her previous PR. Cheadle also took victory in the 200 meter dash and posted a PR in the 100 meter dash at 12.34 seconds.

Other event winners included Remy Abrought (100 meter hurdles, two entries), Josh Freeman (shot put, 16 entries), Kim Fortney (shot put, nine entries), Ashley Gaston (discus, eight entries), Caselyn Harding (pole vault, one entry), Kemar Jones (110 meter hurdles, four entries), Tori Parry (3000 meter run, three entries), Evelyn Scott (400 meter dash, three entries), Amiris Warren (100 meter dash, seven entries) and Chequia Wesley (400 meter hurdles, 1:04.02 PR, two entries). In addition, DeAnna Price was the highest collegiate finisher behind Saluki alum Gwen Berry in the hammer throw.

Up next, Southern will once again travel north to Des Moines, Iowa, for the four-day Missouri Conference Outdoor Championships beginning next Thursday, May 9.
