AUSTIN, Texas -- Saluki track and field competed at Day One of the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round Championships at the University of Texas on Thursday and qualified two student-athletes for the national meet.
DeAnna Price and Kim Fortney made a splash for the Salukis at Day One, qualifying for the national meet in the hammer throw. The Saluki women will travel to Eugene, Ore. to compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 5-8 to attempt to defend former Saluki Jeneva McCall's 2012 hammer throw national title for SIU.
Price, a 2012 All-American in the hammer throw, finished fifth with a launch of 65.04m (213-05) -- five inches off her personal best set at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships on May 10. Fortney, who finished All-MVC in the hammer throw two weeks ago, finished right behind her fellow Saluki in sixth place with a personal best heave of 64.74m (212-05) -- three feet better than her previous PR. Both student-athletes hold the fourth and fifth best women's hammer throws in Saluki history.
Senior Tess Shubert will have a chance to also qualify for the national meet tomorrow after qualifying for quarterfinals in the 400 meter hurdles. Shubert ran a personal best time of 59.15 seconds for eleventh overall in the prelims, which overtakes her previous time as the second-best time in Saluki history. The deciding 400 meter hurdles race will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
Southern also had three other competitors at Day One: Curtis Wideman in the men's discus (30th, 52.58m/172-06), Lauren Cheadle in the women's long jump (39th, 5.65m/18-06.50) and Amiris Warren in the women's 100 meter dash (44th, 11.89 seconds).

Lambert (hammer throw), Bradley Sauer (hammer throw), Tess Shubert (400 meter hurdles quarterfinals), Amiris Warren (200 meter dash prelims) and Curtis Wideman (hammer throw).
