Salukis conclude West Regional with five more national qualifiers

    CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois track and field team concluded its stay at the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas, Saturday with five Salukis earning spots in the NCAA Finals.

    Seniors Jeneva McCall, Malaikah Love and Cody Doerflein as well as junior Zach Dahleen and freshman DeAnna Price each earned a trip to the national finals June 6-9 at Drake Stadium in Desh Moines, Iowa by finishing in the top 12 of their respective events Saturday.

    McCall, who previously qualified for the NCAA Final in the shot put and discus, punched her third ticket to Drake with a second-place throw of 226-10 in Saturday’s women’s hammer throw. Price finished 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 205-05 to make her first national final as a true freshman.

    Love advanced to Drake in the triple jump for the second consecutive season with an eighth-place finish with a distance of 42-02.25, Dahleen ran a 3:46.83 in the men’s 1,500-meters to finish 10th and advance to his first NCAA Finals and Doerflein reached 17-06.50 in the pole vault to take 10th and make the second national finals of his career.

    Also competing for SIU Saturday, junior Kim Fortney took 20th in the hammer throw with a mark of 193-11 while sophomore Kenya Culmer finished 38th in the triple jump with a jump of 39-05.00.

    SIU Will send seven total athletes to Drake, including Jeneva McCall (shot put, discus, hammer throw), Kim Fortney (shot put), Malaikah Love (triple jump) and DeAnna Price (hammer throw on the women’s side and Douglas Palacious (triple jump), Zach Dahleen (1,500-meter run) and Cody Doerflein (pole vault) on the men’s side.

    “I am super excited about the performances this weekend,” said SIU head coach Connie Price-Smith. “We have the most men advancing to the national championships since I have been here. Every person that we brought did a very good job this weekend.”
