Carbondale, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois women's track and field team finished the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships in a tie for 14th place.
SIU's final competitor in the meet, senior Malaikah Love, finished 10th in the triple jump Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. Love's leap of 42-11.00 earned her Second Team All-America honors.
The Saluki women finished the NCAA Championships with 16 team points along with four other teams. Senior Jeneva McCall accounted for all of SIU's points, scoring 10 points with a national title in the hammer throw and six points with a third-place finish in the shot put.
"You can't ask for a lot more than the performances we had," said SIU head coach Connie Price-Smith. "It was a good experience and we had a good showing."
The SIU women barely missed out on adding to their scoring total, finishing in 10th place in three events, including Love, McCall in the discus and freshman DeAnna Price in the hammer throw. Points are awarded to the top eight finishers in each event.
Nonetheless, the 14th-place finish is the second best finish in program history behind the team's ninth-place finish in 2010.
"We had a lot of long throws, fast performances and long jumps that didn't make it in the finals, but were very good competitive marks," Price-Smith said. "I would have liked to have done a little better, maybe finishing in the top 10, but I am very pleased with how it turned out."
