EUGENE, Ore. -- Saluki sophomore Josh Freeman finished 21st in the shot put at Day One of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus on Wednesday.
Freeman, a native of Fox River Grove, Ill., managed a throw of 18.11m (59-05.00) on his second attempt in between fouls on his first and third. This was Freeman's second trip to the NCAA Championships this season alone, as he finished 10th in the shot put at the indoor national meet in March. Freeman's 21st-place finish today will ensure him Honorable Mention All-American honors, which is given to the remaining eight competitors in each event after First-Team (top-eight) and Second-Team (spots 9-16) honors are awarded.
Today's performance wraps up an impressive season for the Saluki sophomore, as this past season Freeman broke and reset both the SIU indoor and outdoor all-time shot put records multiple times and set a new Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships record on his conference-title winning throw of 19.86m (65-02.00) -- in addition to two trips to the national meet and a Junior Pan-American Games gold medal in the shot put last August.
Two Salukis will be in competition on Thursday, as juniors Ashley Gaston (discus) and Curtis Wideman (hammer throw) will take to the ring. Wideman will compete in flight two of the hammer at 3:30 p.m. CT, and Gaston will throw in the second flight of the discus not much later at 4 p.m.
Live results are available at Flash Results, and a live stream will begin on ESPN3 at 5:55 p.m. CT.
