DES MOINES, Iowa -- Saluki freshman Brandon Shemonia became the second Saluki in as many days to land a spot on Team USA for the Pan-American Junior Athletics Championships after his third-place finish in the 10,000 meter run at the USATF Outdoor Junior Championships on Friday.

A native of Scott City, Mo., Shemonia finished outside the top two qualifying spots in third place with a time of 32:15.99, but his personal and season best 10K time of 30:37.36 set at the MVC Outdoor Championships in May was the second overall qualifying mark among competitors. Shemonia will join fellow Saluki freshman Josh Freeman in Medellin, Columbia, for the Pan-American Junior Athletics Championships held Aug. 23-25.

At the senior championships, five-time All-American and former Saluki J.C. Lambert competed in the hammer throw, but failed to register a mark.

Saturday will be SIU's last day in Des Moines, but it will also be its busiest. In the senior championships, two Salukis will compete in the women's shot put at 1 p.m. (former Salukis Kim Fortney and Jeneva McCall) and three will participate in the women's hammer throw at 3:30 p.m. (McCall, former Saluki Gwen Berry and junior DeAnna Price).
