CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Saluki track and field will play host to 11 schools for the scored SIU Invitational at the SIU Student Recreation Center on Friday and Saturday. Representing those 11 schools will be 416 student-athletes entered in 765 events. Coming to Carbondale will be Austin Peay, Bradley, Jackson State, Lipscomb, Mississippi Valley State, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, Western Illinois and Western Kentucky. Day One will consist of the weight throw, long jump and pole vault, beginning at 4 p.m.

    WEEKLY NOTES

    THEY'RE GOING THE DISTANCE
Southern's distance runners are hot off of a Saluki sweep at the MVC Cross Country Championships in November, and have stayed hot throughout the early portion of the indoor season. This past weekend, Krista Menghini (open 3000 meter run) and Mobola Rotibi (800 meter run invitational) each took home event titles and moved themselves up in the Valley standings and SIU record books. As it stands, the Saluki women hold eight top-10 Valley marks in events 800 meters or further.

    STAYING THE COURSE
SIU's throwers didn't replicate the record-shattering performances of the Notre Dame Invite, but had solid performances from its top throwers who are in national contention and saw a handful of impressive PRs as well. Junior Curtis Wideman posted a huge PR in the weight throw invitational at 19.81m (65-00.00), as did junior Ashley Gaston (19.20m/63-00.00). Sophomore Alexus Scott earned her first career victory in the open shot put with a PR throw of 15.62m (51-03.00). Currently, SIU holds nine top-five marks and seven of them would earn All-MVC honors and one MVC title if the season were to end with those marks.

    NATIONAL UPDATE
Nationally, SIU held onto 10 top-50 marks, down from 12 from last week to now. Six of those ten national marks rank in the top-25, and three SIU student-athletes would qualify for nationals if the season ended today (top-16): DeAnna Price (ninth, weight throw), Sophia Lozano (11th, weight throw) and Josh Freeman (11th, shot put).
