CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois track and field teams head to Charleston, Ill. to compete in the 2010 Friday Night Special hosted by Eastern Illinois University at the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse, Friday, Feb. 19.

This meet serves as the final regular season meet for the Salukis before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships, Feb. 27-28, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The SIU women's team, which moved up to No. 11 in the USTFCCCA Division I team rankings, will be looking to defend its 2009 MVC Championship next weekend.

"We're looking to sharpen up this weekend and get ready for conference," head coach Connie Price-Smith said. "Most of our athletes will only compete in one, maybe two events, but we are just looking to fine-tune things and stay sharp.

"You'll see some athletes trying to increase their `PR's' so they are not on the bubble and get a higher seed so they don't have to worry as much (about making nationals) going into conference."

Southern Illinois has seven athletes that have provisionally qualified this season (two men, five women), including junior Gwen Berry, who has qualified in two events, and sophomore Malaikah Love, who has provisional marks in three.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of Tess Shubert, Alisa Baron, Tredene Davis and Kandise Thompson, has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA National meet. They did so last Saturday, Feb. 13, at the GVSU Big Meet where they broke the old school record in the event by nearly four seconds (3:39.51).

Sophomore Jeneva McCall is the only Saluki that has automatically qualified for the National Meet this season, doing so in the weight throw and shot put. McCall has the second furthest shot put in the nation this year and the third furthest weight throw.

The Saluki men have been led on the track by sprinters Anthony Seay, Brandon Deloney and Sammy Biggs, who was named the MVC Male Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. In the field, sophomores J.C. Lambert (weight throw) and Cody Doerflein (pole vault) have already recorded provisional marks.

Most of the sprinters will be running shorter races this weekend and the distance runners will sit out the meet so they are fresh for the conference championships.

All events will take place on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m. with the women's weight throw.
