ST. LOUIS -- Sophomore Bradley Sauer, ranked seventh in the nation in the weight throw, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Sauer's domination in the weight throw continued at the EIU Friday Night Special last Friday with his fifth weight throw title and sixth consecutive meet where he was the highest collegiate finisher. His winning heave of 21.17m (69-05.50) flew eight feet past second place (fellow Saluki Curtis Wideman) and once again broke his personal best, keeping his national ranking steady in the top-ten at seventh in the nation. In Valley standings, Sauer trails only Indiana State's Brandon Pounds, who holds the country's best mark at 22.55m (73-11.25).
Southern makes the trek to Cedar Falls, Iowa, this Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 23-24) for the Missouri Valley Indoor Championships at the University of Northern Iowa, where the Saluki men's squad will begin its title defense.
