Saluki track and field won two events at last-chance meets this weekend, but failed to qualify any additional student-athletes for the NCAA Indoor National Championships slated for next Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.
The Salukis travelled to two different meets -- the Arkansas Final Qualifier and the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame. Four throwers -- Kim Fortney, Josh Freeman, Sophia Lozano and DeAnna Price -- travelled to Fayetteville, Ark., to try and push their PRs, and distance runner and MVC Champion Zach Dahleen traveled to South Bend, Ind., for the invite to improve his mile time.
Fortney won both the women's shot put (three total entrants) and the women's weight throw (five total), but failed to push her PR to crack the top-16. Fortney fell less than two feet shy in the shot put and a half foot short in the weight throw from qualifying for nationals. DeAnna Price and Sophia Lozano took second and third place in the weight throw, respectively.
Dahleen finished eighth out of 33 competitiors in the mile run at Notre Dame, but still fell two seconds shy of entering the highly contentious top-16, where the times range from 3:52 to 3:58. In fact, the top-finisher at Notre Dame on Saturday -- Wisconsin's Austin Mudd -- ran a time of 3:58.59, which only puts him at 14th in the nation. The country's top time belongs to 2012 indoor mile national champion Chris O'Hare of Tulsa, who owns the national collegiate record time of 3:52.98 -- nearly two seconds better than the previous record set in 2012.
Qualifiers for the national meet will be officially announced on Monday, March 4. The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 8-9.
