CARBONDALE, Ill.-- The Southern Illinois track and field team will be sending three athletes to compete in the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend taking place at Boise State University.
The Saluki women head into the championships ranked 11th in the nation, Southern Illinois is the only non-BCS school ranked in the top 25.
"I am really looking forward to getting started tomorrow," said SIU head coach Connie Price-Smith. "We have been at the facility the past two days and they are all ready to compete."
Senior thrower Jeneva McCall will begin competition Friday competing in the weight throw. Going into the championships McCall holds the longest weight throw in the country with the toss of 77-11.5 that she recorded at the Saluki Open on January 13. McCall will also be competing in the shot put on Saturday night.
McCall is currently ranked fifth in the nation in the shot. At last year's championships she finished second in the weight throw and eighth in the shot put earning All-American honors.
J.C. Lambert will compete in weight throw on Saturday at 4 p.m. MST. Lambert's longest toss this season was recoded at the Saluki Open. His distance of 74-4.25 ranks him fourth in the nation. Lambert will be competing against throwers from powerhouse schools such as Princeton, Virginia Tech, LSU, Minnesota, Florida, and Ohio State. The Harrisburg, Ill. native will look to improve upon his fourth place finish at the 2011 Championships.
Multi-event athlete Malaikah Love will compete in the pentathlon on Saturday. Love broke the Missouri Valley Conference record posting a total of 4092 points at the MVC Indoor Championships on Feb. 25-26. Love finished in seventh place at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships. Heading into this weekend's championship the senior is ranked sixth in the nation.
"I just am looking for them to come out and compete the best that they can," said Price-Smith. "Conference compeititon was for the team, this is for them."
The 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships will be held March 9-10 in Nampa, Idaho at the Jackson Indoor Track. ESPN3.com and NCAA.com will provide live coverage of the championships.
