ST. LOUIS -- Sophomore thrower Josh Freeman was named the Missouri Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week after his record-breaking performances on Saturday at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic, the conference announced Wednesday.
The sophomore native of Fox River Grove, Ill., toppled two more all-time shot put records en route to an event victory at the Classic this past weekend. Freeman, who broke SIU throws coach John Smith's all-time SIU indoor shot put record in January and reset his own mark three weeks later, took down Smith's 30-year old outdoor mark in his first attempt in 2014. He threw 19.12m (62-08.75) for the record, which also registers as the Missouri Valley Conference all-time outdoor record -- reclaiming it for SIU after UNI's Justin Romero broke Smith's mark in 2012. Entering Saturday, Freeman already ranked fifth all-time at SIU. Currently, he ranks sixth nationally and fourth in the NCAA West Region.
This weekend Saluki track and field takes the short trip up I-57 to Eastern Illinois, who will host the Big Blue Classic on April 4-5 in Charleston, Ill.
