KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Saluki track and field is set to compete at the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee from April 10-12, beginning with the women's hammer throw on Thursday at 3 p.m. CDT.
SIU will be one of 46 total schools and one of 17 Division I teams at the meet, which will not be scored and will include unattached post-collegiate athletes and high school teams alike for the first time in meet history. Former Salukis Gwen Berry and J.C. Lambert will be part of the post-collegiate crew in Knoxville this weekend, as both will compete in the hammer throw on Thursday.
One national top-25 team will be in competition: host school Tennessee, which boasts the No. 18 men's squad in the country. Illinois State will join SIU in representing the Missouri Valley Conference, the third straight meet the two schools will compete against each other this outdoor season.
Both the Saluki men and women finished third last weekend at the EIU Big Blue Classic, which saw yet another record breaking performance from sophomore Josh Freeman. The Fox River Grove, Ill., native broke the all-time SIU and MVC outdoor shot put records for the second straight week with his winning throw of 19.35m (63-06.00). In less than two years at Southern, Freeman now owns three all-time shot put records between SIU and the Valley (SIU indoor and outdoor, MVC all-time outdoor).
Freshman high jumper Kyle Landon also etched his name into the SIU outdoor records books. The Chester, Ill., native won the high jump with a personal best clearance of 2.19m (7-02.25), which ranks as the fifth-best height in Saluki history outdoors. Landon also got up to fifth all-time indoors at 2.17m (7-01.50), and his latest jump breaks his high school PR of 2.18m (7-02.00).
Nationally, SIU has four student-athletes ranked in the top-50 in their events. That number includes Freeman (sixth) and Landon (ninth), who each rank in the top-10 in their marquee events. Regionally, Southern has 13 student-athletes ranked in the top-48 that would qualify for the NCAA West Regionals if the outdoor season were to end today. In addition to Freeman (fourth) and Landon (sixth) in the shot put and high jump, junior thrower Curtis Wideman also ranks in the top-10 regionally in the hammer throw at 10th (63.83m/209-05) -- which is also currently the 23rd-best throw in the nation.
SIU will only participate in the men's and women's hammer on Thursday (starting at 3 p.m. with the women), but on Friday competition begins for Southern at 12:10 p.m. with the women's 100 meter dash. Live results are available HERE and a live stream is available on Tennessee All-Access, which accepts Saluki All-Access logins.

MVC Weekly Notes
DON'T STOP ME NOW
Sophomore Josh Freeman is off to an incredible start to the outdoor season through only two meets. Only one week has passed since Freeman set the all-time Southern Illinois and Missouri Valley Conference outdoor shot put records at the Bill Cornell Spring Classic on March 29, and yet this past weekend those two records have fallen by Freeman's hand once again. The Fox River Grove, Ill., native shattered his one-week old records on a winning heave of 19.35m (63-06.00) -- which also registered as the EIU Big Blue Classic and O'Brien Field records (the latter of which was held by SIU throws coach John Smith). Freeman, who set the indoor SIU shot record in January, now owns three all-time shot put records between SIU and the MVC in less than two years at Southern. Nationally, his latest mark ranks sixth nationally and fourth in the NCAA West Region.
LANDON ON THE ALL-TIME LIST
Freshman high jumper Kyle Landon didn't take long to leap his way onto SIU's all-time outdoor list, jumping up to fifth all-time in just his second outdoor meet at SIU. Landon won the high jump at the EIU Big Blue Classic with a winning clearance of 2.19m (7-02.25), which registers as the best mark indoors or outdoors since 1996 (Neophytos Kalogerou, 7-03.00). Landon also finished the indoor season fifth all-time at SIU, and outdoors he currently ranks ninth in the nation and sixth in the NCAA West Region.
Currently, SIU has four student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally -- including two underclassmen in the top-10. Sophomore Josh Freeman ranks sixth in the shot put and freshman Kyle Landon ranks ninth in the high jump. Regionally, Southern has 13 student-athletes ranked in the top-48 that would qualify for the NCAA West Regionals if the season were to end today.
