Saluki track and field will send most of its participating squad to Kansas University in Lawrence, Kan., on Thursday for the 87th running of the Kansas Relays, and at the same time two SIU distance runners will travel to Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday.

At Kansas, SIU will be among 250 colleges and universities and 4,000 individual participants at the 87th running of the meet -- the first at the brand-new Rock Chalk Park. At last year's meet, Southern came away two event titles -- including one from returning senior high jumper Kenya Culmer. Dahleen and Darnell will be Southern's first participants at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays since 2012, when Dahleen and fellow distance runners Neal Anderson and Stephen Arvanis made the trip out to California. Dahleen will compete in the open 1500 meter run Friday afternoon and Darnell will run in the Olympic Development/Open Elite portion of the 3000 meter steeplechase on Friday night.

Last week at the Sea Ray Relays, the Salukis came away with one event win and a new school record in the 4x800 meter relay. Freshman Kyle Landon won his eighth high jump title in 10 tries at SIU with a winning clearance of 2.15m (7-00.50), and the women's 4x800 meter relay team of Alyssa Allison, Kelley Gallagher, Allison Gallo and Mobola Rotibi broke the previous school record (set in 2007) by four seconds at a time of 8:54.38.

On the national stage, Southern currently has four student-athletes ranked within the top-50 in their events: Josh Freeman in the shot put (seventh, 19.35m), Kyle Landon in the high jump (13th, 2.19m), Curtis Wideman in the hammer throw (25th, 63.86m) and Kenya Culmer in the high jump (44th, 1.75m). Additionally, each of those top-50 marks rank at the top in the Missouri Valley Conference in 2014. In the NCAA West Region, the Salukis currently hold 13 marks or times in the top-48 that would qualify for the regional meet if the season were to end today.

Competition at the Kansas Relays will begin at 11:45 a.m. on Thursday for the Salukis with the men's hammer throw. At Mt. SAC on Friday, Zach Dahleen will run in the open 1500 meter run at 1:45 p.m., and Sadie Darnell will compete in the Olympic Development/Open Elite edition of the 3000 meter steeplechase at 9:10 p.m.

    MVC Weekly Notes

    FRESHMAN PHENOM
Freshman Kyle Landon has transitioned smoothly into the collegiate high jumping elite and has not slowed down from the indoor to the outdoor seasons. Landon, a native of nearby Chester, Ill. (where he won seven state titles), has won the high jump in eight of his first 10 collegiate attempts at clearing the bar -- including his first three jumps outdoors. Currently, he ranks 13th nationally, ninth in the NCAA West Region and first in the MVC outdoors.

    NATIONAL UPDATE
