LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Saluki track and field will make the trip west to Kansas University on Thursday and compete in three days of the four-day Kansas Relays.

The Kansas Relays -- in its 85th year of existence -- is one of the premier high school, collegiate and professional meets of the outdoor season. The 2013 running of the relays will be the final year in Kansas' Memorial Stadium, as the Jayhawks will move into Rock Chalk Park in 2014. In 2012, KU decided to hold two professional events in the downtown area of Lawrence -- the elite men's shot put and long jump, the first street events ever in the United States -- and this year the new tradition will continue with the elite men's shot put and women's long jump competing downtown.

Notable schools joining the Salukis in Lawrence include Kansas State (No. 21 in men's competition), Nebraska (No. 20 in men's, No. 22 in women's), Michigan and fellow Missouri Valley Conference member Drake University. In addition to hosting the meet, Kansas will boast the No. 1 women's team in the country.

The Salukis are coming off a superb weekend at the Ole Miss Invite, where Southern won two events, notched six runners-up and set numerous personal bests to better its resume for NCAA West Region qualifying. Winning for SIU were J.C. Lambert (hammer throw, fourth consecutive win) and Kim Fortney (shot put).

Southern is sitting in good position with two meets to go until the MVC Championships begin on May 9. As it stands, the Salukis occupy 23 top-three MVC times/marks -- including five first-place occupants on the men's side.

Numerous Salukis are ranked in the top-50 in the NCAA West Region -- of which the top 48 individuals and 24 relays (one per team) qualify to compete in the first round of the NCAA Championships beginning May 23. Between the two squads, Southern owns 21 top-50 marks -- all of whom would qualify if the season ended today (minus the men's 4x400 meter relay team, which ranks 29th once schools with multiple entries are taken out).

Nationally, Southern still claims a decent smattering of student-athletes in the top-50 in their respective events with 10 student-athletes (five apiece between men and women).

The Salukis will begin the Kansas Relays with the men's hammer throw at noon on Thursday.
