ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois thrower Jeneva McCall and distance runner Jeff Schirmer have been named State Farm Missouri Valley Conference women's field and men's track athletes of the week, respectively, the conference announced Tuesday.
This marks the third straight week that McCall has taken the conference honor, while it is the first time Schirmer won the award in 2011.
McCall set another facility record in 2011, as she broke Auburn's Hutsell-Rosen Track record Saturday in the women's hammer throw with a toss of 217-01. The junior broke the previous mark by nearly 20 feet in the win, as she was among four Salukis in the top six of the final standings. Additionally, McCall topped second place finisher Kristin Smith by 15 feet and third place Juliana Smith of Mississippi by a 17 foot margin. McCall would also take second in the discus throw at 176-07 and third in the shot put at 53-03.50.
In a season filled with broken records, Schirmer added one more to the list Thursday night at the Mt. SAC Relays by shattering the Southern Illinois and Missouri Valley Conference record in the 10,000m run. Schirmer, who broke the SIU and MVC record in the indoor 5000m run in January, crossed the finish line with a time of 28:42.71. The senior topped the Saluki mark previously held by Chris Bunyan's 1984 mark by nearly six seconds and broke the Valley record of 28:44.91 held by Drake's Jason Lehmkule since 2000.
The men's team moved up 28 spots to No. 54 in the most recent USTFCCCA computer rankings. Meanwhile, the women's team stayed at No. 22.
SIU will return to action this Friday and Saturday, as they will compete at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
