JONESBORO, Ark. -- Saluki track and field is set to travel to Arkansas State this weekend for the A-State Red Wolves Open at the A-State Track and Field Complex on Friday and Saturday.

A total of 12 schools that include Memphis, Ole Miss and Ohio State will join SIU in Jonesboro for the meet -- which, will not be scored. Southern and Ohio State were originally scheduled to attend the Ole Miss Invite this weekend before structural difficulties in Oxford forced the meet to be cancelled.

This weekend's meet comes on the heels of a successful weekend at two prestigious meets across the country last week. At the Kansas Relays at the brand-new Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan., the Salukis came away with three event titles -- two of which came on career-best performances that both rank in the top-five all-time at SIU.

Freshman Kyle Landon won his ninth high jump in 11 tries at SIU with a personal-best clearance of 2.20m (7-02.50), which improves upon his position in fifth all-time at Southern. Junior Ashley Gaston won the discus on a six-foot PR of 52.84m (173-04), which only ranks behind three-time NCAA champion Jeneva McCall and 2014 Saluki Hall of Fame inductee Amarachi Ukabam in Saluki history. Lastly, sophomore Josh Freeman -- SIU's all-time leader in both the indoor and outdoor shot put -- won the shot put in windy conditions at 18.87m (61-11.00).

More than 1,500 miles west of Lawrence, SIU was represented by two distance runners at the renown Mt. SAC Relays at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif. Senior Zach Dahleen, SIU school record holder in the indoor mile (4:00.16) and outdoor 1500m (3:41.18), finished 10th in the 1500 meter run among some of the best mid-distance runners in the country at a season-best time of 3:42.55. Junior Sadie Darnell was also up against some of the best athletes in the country in the Olympic Development/Elite Open 3000 meter steeplechase, where she finished 15th at 10:49.65.

Southern currently has four student-athletes ranked in the top-50 in their respective events on the national collegiate list -- including three Saluki men within the top-15: Josh Freeman (shot put, ninth), Kyle Landon (high jump, ninth) and Zach Dahleen (1500m, 13th). In the NCAA West Region, SIU currently has 12 student-athletes that rank within the top-48 that would qualify for the regional meet if the season were to end today.

Competition at Day One begins with the women's hammer throw at 3 p.m.

    MVC Weekly Notes

Freshman Kyle Landon's initial Saluki campaign has been dominant from the beginning. Landon, currently ranked atop the MVC and tied for ninth nationally in the high jump at 2.20m (7-02.50), has won nine of his first 11 collegiate attempts in the high jump at SIU and ranks fifth all-time in both the outdoor and indoor (2.17m/7-01.50) high jumps at Southern. Landon's marks are the best at SIU since 2005, and that year should continue to dial back if his outdoor season continues at its current torrid pace. The Chester, Ill., native (where he won seven state titles), is undefeated in the outdoor season and has set a new overall career-best in two of his last three meets.

Last weekend the Salukis competed not only at the 87th running of the Kansas Relays, but SIU also sent two distance runners to the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. on Friday. In Lawrence, SIU won three event titles at the brand-new Rock Chalk Park. In Walnut, Southern's Zach Dahleen (1500m, 10th place, 3:42.55) and Sadie Darnell (3000m steeplechase, 15th place, 10:49.65) competed among some ofthe best distance runners in the United States.
