ST. LOUIS - Sadie Darnell of Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced today. Darnell was honored for her performance during the period of May 12-18.

Junior Sadie Darnell not only earned her second-consecutive All-MVC honor in the outdoor 5000 meter run this past weekend at the MVC Outdoor Championships, but she was also awarded her second straight MVC Elite 18 Award for her performance in the event and her work in the classroom (4.0 GPA, elementary education). Darnell finished third at a new personal-best time of 16:47.41, now the second-best time in SIU history. Since the award was first instituted in 2010-11, only two people have ever repeated as Elite 18 recipients in track: Darnell and former Saluki Lucas Cherry.

It was also announced on Thursday that Darnell qualified for the NCAA First Round Preliminaries at the NCAA West Regional in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. At the MVC Championships last week, Darnell finished fourth at a personal-best time of 10:23.11 -- which not only qualifies her for the regional, but would have broken her own school record set in 2013 if not for teammate Krista Menghini (second place, 10:12.54).

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
