ST. LOUIS -- Saluki track and field had 14 student-athletes earn Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete distinction for the 2013-14 season, the conference announced Friday.
To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2, and they must have finished in the top-eight of an individual event or the top-three of a relay event at either the MVC Indoor or Outdoor Championships in 2014. Freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible.
Four Saluki men and 10 Saluki women were awarded Scholar-Athlete distinction. SIU's junior class was well represented as 11 of the 14 total honorees were Saluki juniors, including nine of the 10 women's award winners. Senior Matthew Benes led all current Salukis with three Scholar-Athlete honors, and six of the 10 Saluki females honored won their second consecutive award.
Junior Sadie Darnell -- who won the MVC Elite 18 Award for the second-straight season -- was one of four women in the Valley and one of five across both the men's and women's honorees to have a perfect 4.0 GPA. In fact, Southern is the only school in the Valley this season to have two honorees with perfect 4.0 GPAs (Darnell and junior Lacey Gibson).
