Five track and field athletes named Academic All-District

    CARBONDALE, Ill. — Five members of the Southern Illinois track and field/cross country teams have been named Capital One Academic All-District 5, as announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

    Lucas Cherry, Brian Dixon and Malaikah Love earned First Team honors while Kenya Culmer and Kim Fortney earned Second Team designation.

    Cherry is a junior accounting major with a 3.97 GPA. He earned All-MVC honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and was part of SIU's MVC champion distance medley relay team indoors. A two-time MVC Scholar Athlete, the Carbondale native was named the MVC's Elite 18 recipient at the 2012 MVC Outdoor Championships.

    Dixon is a sophomore accounting major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA. He earned all-conference honors in cross country last fall after finishing ninth at the MVC Championships, and was SIU’s top finisher at the 2011 NCAA Regional. The Springfield, Ill., native was named the MVC’s Elite 18 recipient for men’s cross country.

    A three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete, Love graduated this spring with a 3.87 GPA in dental hygiene. She won MVC titles in the pentathlon and both the indoor and outdoor triple jump in addition to earning All-MVC honors in the indoor and outdoor long jumps. The Carbondale native competed at the NCAA West Regional in the triple jump, advancing to the national final.



    Culmer is a sophomore management major with a 3.8 GPA. A 2012 MVC Scholar-Athlete, she won the conference title in the outdoor high jump as well as earning All-MVC honors in the indoor high jump. The Nassau, Bahamas, native competed in the NCAA West Regional in the high jump and triple jump.

    A two-time MVC Scholar Athlete, Fortney is a junior communication disorders major with a 3.85 GPA. She earned All-MVC honors in the hammer throw in addition to advancing to the NCAA West Regional in the shot put and hammer. The Arcola, Ill., native will compete in her first NCAA Finals next week.

    All of the First Team All-District honorees will be on the Academic All-American ballot. All-American’s will be announced June 21.

    The SIU track and field team will conclude its 2011-12 season June 6-9 as seven Salukis compete at the NCAA Finals at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
