ST. LOUIS -- Saluki track and field had 13 student-athletes named Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes for the 2012-13 indoor and outdoor seasons, the conference announced Monday.
To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic and athletic standing, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2, and must have finished in the top-eight in individual events or top-three in relay events at either the indoor or outdoor conference meet.
Nine women and four men were bestowed the honor, seven of whom are underclassmen and ten of whom are first-time honorees. Matthew Benes and Kenya Culmer earned their second-consecutive Scholar-Athlete distinction, and senior Kim Fortney earned her third straight honor in four years. First-team CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District member Brian Dixon was also named an MVC Scholar-Athlete with the third-best GPA among those named on the men's side. Women's MVC Elite 18 recipient Sadie Darnell was one of five honorees and three women named to have a perfect 4.0 GPA.
