ST. LOUIS -- Former Saluki track and field student-athlete Lucas Cherry has been named one of two recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award, the conference announced Wednesday.

Named after legendary Southern Illinois University athletics administrator and Saluki Hall of Fame member Dr. Charlotte West, the award is given to a male and female MVC student-athlete each year who display academic excellence, athletic prowess and a proven record of community service and leadership.

Cherry, now an SIU graduate with an accounting degree, has been a stalwart Saluki representative on the track, in the classroom and in the community during his time at Southern. The Carbondale, Ill., native is a three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete, a two-time All-MVC performer in the 3000 meter steeplechase, a two-time MVC Elite 18 recipient, and a 2012 first-team selection to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District team.

This spring, Cherry won the 3000 meter steeplechase at the prestigious Kansas Relays. He was a spring recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference Leadership and Service Award. An MVC President's Council Academic Excellence Award winner, Cherry was also honored as the SIU College of Business Outstanding Senior of the Year and SIU College of Business Outstanding Senior of Accountancy. He plans to pursue a Masters of Business Administration at Oral Roberts University this fall.
