CARBONDALE, Ill.— Southern Illinois track and field’s Jeneva McCall has been named a semifinalist for the Bowerman, an award given annually to the top male and female collegiate track and field athlete.
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced a list of 10 semifinalists Tuesday for the women’s Bowerman. The USTFCCCA will announce three finalists for the award June 29 and the winner will be announced December 19 at the USTFCCCA Convention.
McCall recently completed her collegiate track and field career as one of the most decorated athletes in SIU history. She was named the USTFCCCA’s Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons after earning a combined five NCAA All-America honors during her senior campaign.
During the indoor season, McCall won a national title in the weight throw and finished as the runner-up in the shot put at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships. She won Missouri Valley Conference titles in both events to earn MVC Most Outstanding Field Athlete honors.
Outdoors, McCall won the third NCAA title of her career in the hammer throw in addition to placing third in the shot put and 10th in the discus. She swept MVC titles in all three events at the MVC Outdoor Championships, earning MVC Most Valuable Athlete and Most Outstanding Field Athlete honors.
McCall finished her collegiate career having earned three NCAA titles, 14 NCAA All-America honors and 14 MVC individual titles. Thursday, she will compete in the hammer throw at the US Olympic Trials for a spot on Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics.
