CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Three former Southern Illinois track and field athletes finished in the top 10 in the women's hammer throw at the US Olympic Trials Thursday in Eugene, Ore., although none made Team USA for the 2012 London Games.
Brittany Riley was the top finisher among the former Salukis, coming in sixth with a throw of 227-04 while Gwen Berry finished seventh with a throw of 225-10 and Jeneva McCall came in 10th with a throw of 219-02.
McCall's Olympic hopes are still alive as she will compete in two more events at the Trials. The recent Saluki grad will compete in the women's discus starting Friday and the women's shot put beginning June 28.
Former Saluki distance runner Jeff Schirmer will compete in the men's 10k run Friday at the US Olympic Trials while SIU sophomore Kenya Culmer will compete in the women's high jump at the Bahamas Olympic Trials over the weekend.
