NEW ORLEANS -- Both the Saluki men's and women's track and field teams -- as well as seven individual student-athletes -- earned national All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday.

The team award is bestowed upon each Division I squad that boasts a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher -- an honor that was given this year to 208 women's teams and 116 men's teams. Both SIU teams were recognized, as the Saluki women finished the 2013-14 academic year with a cumulative GPA of 3.38 and the men finished right at 3.0.

A total of 1,223 individual Division I student-athletes were honored -- 727 women from 193 schools and 496 men from 165 schools. To be eligible, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and completed at least one of the following two accomplishments; either finish the indoor season ranked in the top-96 in an individual event or top-48 in a relay event, or compete at any round of the NCAA Outdoor Championships (including the East and West preliminary rounds).

Four Saluki women and three Saluki men each earned the distinction. On the women's side were Sadie Darnell (4.0 GPA, Elementary Education), Mobola Rotibi (3.56 GPA, Finance), Sophia Lozano (3.31 GPA, Mathematics) and Krista Menghini (3.30 GPA, Exercise Science). Recognized for the Saluki men were Kyle Landon (3.90 GPA, Accounting), Matthew Benes (3.50 GPA, Electrical Engineering) and Kemar Jones (3.38 GPA, Geography and Environmental Resources).

This is the second-consecutive All-Academic honor for Darnell, Lozano and Benes, who were also recognized in 2013. Darnell, the 2013 and 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Elite 18 Award winner, ranks in the upper echelon academically in the nation. Her perfect 4.0 GPA is one of only 39 among Division I women honored and also one of only 56 of either gender honored this season.
