CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Saluki track and field will begin the 2013-14 indoor season with the Saluki Fast Start at the SIU Recreation Center on Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m.
Seven schools are making the trek through the snow to Carbondale on Saturday. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Mississippi Valley State, Rend Lake, Saint Louis, Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech will all be in attendance.
Southern is coming off a productive season that saw two All-Americans, three second-team All-Americans, five NCAA national qualifiers, 18 NCAA regional qualifiers and eight men's Missouri Valley Conference individual championships.
The Saluki men lost All-American thrower J.C. Lambert, but return two outdoor MVC Champions (Josh Freeman and Nikolai Gall) and three outdoor regional qualifiers (Matthew Benes, Bradley Sauer, Curtis Wideman). Sauer, a second-team All-American in the weight throw indoors in 2013, will sit out the duration of the indoor season due to injury.
The Saluki women will be without second-team All-American thrower Kim Fortney, but they retain All-American hammer thrower DeAnna Price, as well as nine NCAA regional qualifiers and 14 All-MVC performers. Senior Kenya Culmer will also look to be a leader alongside Price. Culmer, who owns both the indoor and outdoor SIU high jump records, finished second in both high jumps and third in both triple jumps at the MVC Championships in 2013.
Competition will begin at 10 a.m. at the SIU Rec Center with the women's pole vault, women's triple jump and men's weight throw.
