Byrne begins his first season as a volunteer assistant coach with the cross country team after finishing his career at SIU as one of the most prolific cross country runners in its history.
In his three-year tenure at Southern Illinois, Byrne amassed five individual cross country titles and 12 top 10 finishes. He set a personal best time of 24:23.56 in the 8K during the 2005 MVC Championship.
Byrne capped off his SIU career by qualifying for the 2005 NCAA Championships where he finished 186th out of 253 runners with a career-best time of 31:46.60 in the 10K.
The three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection is also the first SIU cross country runner to qualify for nationals in seven years.
