CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois cross country team kept their hot streak going at home, sweeping both team titles for the second time in a row this season at the Saluki Invitational this morning.
The Saluki women dominated the 5K race to start the morning, placing nine of their 17 runners in the top-20. Sophomore Sadie Darnell came in first place in the women's 5K, notching her second win this season and her third top-ten finish. Darnell's time of 18:21.14 was seven seconds ahead of second-place finisher Lacey Gibson and is more than a second better than her sixth-place 5K time at the EIU Walt Crawford Open two weeks ago.
In the men's 8K, Southern took positions two through 12 to take the team win. In his first race this season, junior Brian Dixon came in second place behind Northern Iowa's Brett Egan with a time of 25:29.60.
The pack of Salukis from second to 12th were separated by less than a second, and places two through five were separated by less than three tenths of a second. Junior Zach Dahleen (third) and freshmen Juan Carrera (fourth) and Nick Schrader (fifth) all finished within the top-five.
The Salukis return to action next Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill.
