Cross Country men take first, women second at UE Invitational

    EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Southern Illinois University cross country teams traveled to Evansville, Ind. for the University of Evansville Invitational Saturday and came home with first place honors in the men's 8K and second place in the women's 5K.

    The men's team was dominant placing seven runners in the top-25 to win their second team title of the season. Senior Neal Anderson led the way placing second overall with a time of 25:12.18. Brian Dixon followed in the third spot with a time of 25:16.30.

    Just behind Dixon were Zach Dahleen placing fifth with a time of 25:34.96 and Cole Allison placing sixth posting a time of 25:36.32. Lucas Cherry finished with a time of 25:51.58 to round out the top ten.

    "It is always good to get a win. Today was a good confidence builder," said SIU coach Matt Sparks. "I was especially excited to see Cole Allison mix it up with our leaders."

    Kulayifi Haji placed 20th with a time of 26:22.11, Evan Ehrenheim followed closely placing 23rd with a time of 26:30.94. TJ Heffernan and Brad Wrage also competed for the Salukis placing 28th and 82nd, respectively.

    On the women's side once again Lacey Gibson was the top finisher for the Salukis placing second overall with a 5K finish time of 18:14.79.

    "Lacey Gibson continues to shine. Her confidence is growing by the week," Sparks said. "We just need the other girls to feed off of her energy."



    Four other runner's placed in the top 25. Jamie Pfister finished in seventh place with a time of 18:31.37. Eileen Schweiss posted a time of 18:52.18 to place 15th with Sarah McIntosh following in the 17th position with a time of 18:55.51. Tori Parry finished in 22nd posting a time of 19:03.89.

    Sadie Darnell and Mobola Rotibi placed 36th and 49th, respectively to finish inside the top 50. Also competing for the women were Jamie Hershfang, Kaylyn Shaw, and Madeline Sopena.

    "I am proud of their efforts, finishing second behind a good Belmont team is nothing to be embarrassed about."

    The Salukis will look to continue their success when they travel to Terra Haute, Ind. on Oct. 30 to compete in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
