TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Saluki cross country competed among the best competition in the country at the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, where the men finished 16th out of 52 schools and the women finished 27th out of 49 teams.
The Saluki men beat out 36 schools, including No. 12 Indiana and MVC members Illinois State, Indiana State and Loyola. All five of SIU's returning All-MVC performers from 2012 finished within the top half of the 359 finishers, and all six Saluki runners posted season-best 8K times.
Senior Zach Dahleen was the lone Saluki finisher in the top-100 after he finished 87th at 24:31.40. Nick Schrader (107th, 24:40.94), Brian Dixon (124th, 24:46.77), Oscar Medina (134th, 24:49.63), Juan Carrera (139th, 24:53.19) and T.J. Heffernan (241st, 25:23.06) rounded out the Saluki men.
The Saluki women posted three finishers in the top-half, including two within the top-100 out of 340 runners in their first 6K race of the season. Sophomore Kelley Gallagher led the way in 82nd place after clocking in at 21:18.72. Not far behind her was junior Sadie Darnell, who finished 87th at 21:21.10. Tori Parry (188th, 21:59.85), Lacey Gibson (203rd, 22:06.08), Krista Menghini (214th, 22:09.40) and Mobola Rotibi (250th, 22:24.37) were the remaining Salukis in competition.
SIU will compete at the Missouri Valley Conference cross country championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sat., Nov. 2.
