CARBONDALE, Ill. --The Southern Illinois cross country team ended its regular season Sunday at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Terre Haute, Ind. The men notched a second place finish for the third year in a row while the women placed seventh.
The men placed four runners in the top-ten and were lead by a new leader. Zach Dahleen was the top finisher for the Saluki men placing third overall with an 8K time of 25:18.8. Senior Neal Anderson finished fifth overall posting a time of 25:20.7.
Brian Dixon placed ninth with a time of 25:30.6. Cole Allision finished just one second behind Dixon in tenth place. Evan Ehrenheim and T.J. Heffernan came in 21st and 23rd recording times of 25:57.5 and 25:58.1, respectively.
The Sycamores of Indiana State won their third straight men's cross country MVC Championship placing six runners in the top-ten and finishing with 34 points to edge out the Salukis 48 total points.
The Saluki women placed seventh overall in the 5K championship event. Senior Jamie Pfister placed 15th overall to be the top SIU women's finisher with a time of 18:29.2. Lacey Gibson followed Pfister in 16th place posting a time of 18:32.7.
The women of Illinois State edged out Wichita State to end their six-year run as the MVC women's champion. The Redbirds of ISU finished with 44 total team points to earn the 2011 title.
The Salukis will return to post-season action when they travel to DeKalb, Ill. on Nov. 12 to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional.
