NEW ORLEANS -- Saluki cross country earned two team academic honors and an individual recognition from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the USTFCCCA announced Friday.
Sophomore Kristen Levi represented SIU on the women's individual all-academic team. In order to earn individual All-Academic status, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher and either finished as an All-American at the national meet or place within the top-15 finishers (or top-10 percent) at an NCAA Regional meet.
Levi led the Saluki women to a historic 2013 season that included the first Missouri Valley Conference title for the SIU women in 21 years and the highest NCAA Midwest Regional finish in the history of Southern's women's program (fourth). At the regional meet, Levi was SIU's top finisher in 20th place. Levi owns a 3.84 GPA in exercise science, which ranks as the 40th-best GPA of the 129 Division I honorees.
Both the Saluki men's and women's squads earned All-Academic team honors for the 2013 season. To earn All-Academic status, teams must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA. Southern was one of only 146 programs that had both its men's and women's teams recognized.
The Saluki women compiled a 3.63 GPA, which tied for the 20th-best in the country among the 217 women's teams that were honored. Meanwhile, the Saluki men earned All-Academic status with a 3.21 cumulative GPA.
