NEW ORLEANS -- Junior Brian Dixon was named to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team for the 2012 cross country season, the association announced on Monday.
Dixon, an accounting major with a 3.962 GPA, is the first Saluki since 2005 (Sarah Rinker) and the first Saluki male since 1996 (Stelios Marneros) to earn the honor for the cross country season.
The junior native of Springfield, Ill., ran at the national meet back in November after stellar outings at the MVC Championships (sixth place, All-MVC) and the NCAA Midwest Regionals (19th place, All-Region).
Dixon was the fifth Saluki in eight years to qualify for the national meet, and the first to do so since Jeff Schirmer in 2009 (19th place, All-American).
Overall, the Saluki men's team had the 13th-highest GPA in the country at 3.477. Both the Saluki men and women (3.485) had the highest GPA's in the Missouri Valley Conference.
