CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois track and field/cross country athlete T.J. Heffernan has been named a spring recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference’s State Farm Good Neighbor Award, the league announced Tuesday.
A junior distance specialist, Hefferman was SIU’s representative for the award based on his efforts in the classroom and in the community.
The Batavia, Ill., native holds a 3.831 GPA in accounting and has been on the dean's list for six consecutive semesters. He has also been involved in SIU’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee for three years as the treasurer.
In his free time, Heffernan has been involved in Family Reading Night at Carruthers Elementary School in Murphysboro, Ill., in addition to participating in Read Across America Day at the school. Also, Heffernan participated in Natalie’s Toy Drive to benefit Cardinal Glenon Hospital in St. Louis this winter, as well as helping organize the 2012 SIU SAAC Talent Show this spring to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale.
The MVC presents the Good Neighbor Award to one student-athlete from each Valley institution during the fall, winter and spring seasons, for a total of 30 recipients throughout the year. In order to be eligible, student-athletes must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport during the season of recognition. Institutions select their Good Neighbor Award honorees.
