ST. LOUIS -- Former Saluki track and field student-athlete Lucas Cherry has been named one of four recipients of the Missouri Valley Conference Emerson Excellence Postgraduate Scholarship Award, the conference announced Monday.
The MVC Emerson Excellence Award is a postgraduate scholarship worth $5,000 voted on by the Missouri Valley Conference Faculty Athletics Representatives Committee and announced by MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin. To be eligible for consideration, recipients must have achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.40, participated with distinction in a Missouri Valley Conference championship sport for at least two seasons at the nominating institution and must graduate from their institutions within 18 months following selection at the spring meetings of the Faculty Athletics Representative Committee. Also, the recipients must be accepted for postgraduate studies at an institution of higher learning at the time of receipt of the scholarship. And, the recipients must have completed eligibility for participation in intercollegiate athletics in the academic year in which nominated.
Cherry, now an SIU graduate with an accounting degree, has been a stalwart Saluki representative on the track, in the classroom and in the community during his time at Southern. The Carbondale, Ill., native is a three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete, a two-time All-MVC performer in the 3000 meter steeplechase, a two-time MVC Elite 18 recipient, and a 2012 first-team selection to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District team.
This spring, Cherry won the 3000 meter steeplechase at the prestigious Kansas Relays. He was a spring recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference Leadership and Service Award. An MVC President's Council Academic Excellence Award winner, Cherry was also honored as the SIU College of Business Outstanding Senior of the Year and SIU College of Business Outstanding Senior of Accountancy. He plans to pursue a Masters of Business Administration at Oral
Roberts University this fall.
