INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Saluki track and field and cross country student-athlete Lucas Cherry was named a winner of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, an award worth $7,500 given nationally to 174 student-athletes each year.
Given since 1964, the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship is given to 29 male and 29 female student-athletes each fall, winter and spring season. To qualify, student-athletes must be in their final year of eligibility, excel academically and athletically, plan to pursue graduate coursework and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2.
The honors keep racking up for Cherry, who just last month won the Missouri Valley Conference Emerson Excellence Award (a postgraduate scholarship worth $5,000) and the MVC Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award. Cherry is the first Saluki since Bryan Mullins (men's basketball, 2009) to earn both the MVC and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.
Cherry, now an SIU graduate with an accounting degree, has been a stalwart Saluki representative on the track, in the classroom and in the community during his time at Southern. The Carbondale, Ill., native is a three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete, a two-time All-MVC performer in the 3000 meter steeplechase, a two-time MVC Elite 18 recipient, and a 2012 first-team selection to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District team.
This spring, Cherry won the 3000 meter steeplechase at the prestigious Kansas Relays. He was a spring recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference Leadership and Service Award. An MVC President's Council Academic Excellence Award winner, Cherry was also honored as the SIU College of Business Outstanding Senior of the Year and SIU College of Business Outstanding Senior of Accountancy. He plans to pursue a Masters of Business Administration at Oral Roberts University this fall.
