ST. LOUIS -- The Southern Illinois women and men have been selected as the 2014 favorites by a vote of Missouri Valley Conference cross country coaches in their annual preseason poll.  This is the fourth-consecutive year that the Saluki men have been picked to win at the beginning of the season.

After winning last year's MVC Cross Country Championship and returning the fastest-seven members of the championship squad, the league coaches picked Southern Illinois  to claim the women's title in 2014.  The Salukis received six first-place votes and a total of 95 points due to their experience and depth.  Juniors Kristen Levi (3rd-place) and Kelley Gallagher (5th), along with senior Sadie Darnell (4th) earned All-Conference First Team status last year, with Krista Menghini (12th) taking All-Conference Honorable Mention.

The MVC Championship win last season was the first for the women's team since 1992.

The Southern Illinois men's cross country team will look to win their third-consecutive MVC Championship and 15th overall. The Salukis were picked by the coaches to win with three first-place votes and 67 points.  SIU returns five of their top-eight from a year ago with senior Nick Schrader (fifth-place) and juniors Oscar Medina (sixth-place) and Juan Carrera (12th-place) back on the trails.

The Salukis open the season on Aug. 29 with the Saluki Early Bird. Start time is set for 5:30 p.m.
