Southern Illinois head cross country coach Matt Sparks was named the Missouri Valley Conference's Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, the Valley announced yesterday at the State Farm MVC Championships.

This is the third time Coach Sparks has been honored by the Valley, the first two coming in back-to-back men's championship seasons in 2007 and 2008. Sparks added his fourth men's MVC title yesterday, tying Lew Hartzog for second in SIU history, one behind Bill Cornell's five MVC titles.

Preseason favorites to win the conference, the Salukis upended pre-championship favorite Indiana State, who had won the previous three men's titles. The 2012 men's squad placed five All-MVC runners in the top-ten, the most in a single MVC Championship under Matt Sparks and the most in the Valley since 2009 (Indiana State, five). Now with 13 total championships in school history, the Salukis remain the Missouri Valley's all-time leader in men's conference championships.
