INDIANAPOLIS -- Saluki cross country student-athlete Brian Dixon has qualified as an individual for the NCAA Nationals next week, the NCAA announced Saturday.
Dixon, who finished 19th and was named All-Region at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, is the fifth Saluki in the last eight years to qualify for the national meet. 2009 was the last time a Saluki ran at nationals, when Jeff Schirmer earned a second-straight All-American honor with a 19th-place finish.
For nationals, 18 teams automatically qualify by finishing in the top two at their regional meets, and 13 additional at-large bids are awarded across the board. From there, the top four runners at each regional that are not attached to an advancing team are selected to go to the national meet as an individual.
"It is an honor to be able to represent SIU on the national stage individually because not a lot of people get the opportunity to do that," Dixon said. "With all of us returning next year, hopefully we can represent SIU as a team at the national meet."
The NCAA National meet will take place next Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The men's race will begin at approximately 12:15 p.m. CST.
