Pictured above is the 1971 Saluki baseball team that went to the College World Series and was the national runner-up, finishing second to Southern California.
Saluki Postseason Facts
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 14 (last: 1990)
Record: 39-30
CWS Appearances: 5 (last: 1977)
CWS Record: 12-10
Best CWS Finish: 2nd (1968 & 1971)
Since joining the division I ranks in 1966, Southern Illinois has been one of the more successful and most frequent participants in the NCAA post-season tournament.
The Salukis have made five trips to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The 1968 team, coached by Joe Lutz, and the 1971 team, coached by Itch Jones, each finished as national runners-up. SIU lost both those series to Southern California.
Jones led SIU to the CWS three times in six years. He had the Salukis back in the CWS in 1974 and again in 1977 with each team finishing in third place.
SIU is one of 36 teams in the nation to have participated in the College World Series five or more times. The Salukis have made 14 NCAA Tournaments in program history, with their last coming in 1990.
The Salukis hold one district championship team record with one individual CWS Record. SIU hit nine home runs in a 15-6 victory over Ball State in the 1969 District 4 playoffs. Individually, Craig Robinson is tied with 18 other players for the most doubles in a CWS. Robinson had four in five games in the 1977 Series.
