HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Dean Cademartori's grand slam helped key a six-run second inning as Southern Illinois (4-1) cruised to a 12-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (5-4) earlier today at the CW Lighting Sam Houston State Baseball Tournament.
After scoring a pair of runs in the first, Cademartori's first career grand slam ignited a six-run second that extended SIU's lead to 8-0.
The Dawgs followed with three more runs in the third and one in the fourth to finish off the Islanders.
Kevin Koski, who has not struck out in his first 24 at-bats this season, went 3-for-6 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBI to key SIU's 12 hits.
Emrick went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI-single (third), while Lairson finished at 2-for-4 with two runs.
Cademartori's homer, which marked both his first this season and fifth of his career, was the first grand slam by a Saluki since Matt Brewer accomplished the feat at New Orleans on March 20, 2005.
Junior right-hander Jordan Powell (1-1) struck out six and allowed one run in seven innings to pick up his first win at SIU.
SIU heads to Tennessee-Martin for its first midweek game on Wednesday, Feb. 22. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., CST.
