Carbondale, Ill. - Aaron Fangman made an unbelievable catch in right field, and before that, Denver Stuckey hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run fourth inning to highlight Southeast Missouri State's (11-8) 7-5 win over Southern Illinois (15-11) earlier today at Abe Martin Field.

Fangman's grab came in the bottom of the fourth, where SIU had the bases loaded with two out. P.J. Finigan was at the plate for the Salukis, and smashed a ball to windy right field. Fangman had his back completely turned to home plate and immediately started chasing the ball. He then made an over-the-shoulder catch in the webbing of his glove after diving on the play. Had the ball dropped in safely, the Salukis would have scored at least three runs and the outcome of the game could have been different.

In what was a game that lasted three hours and fifteen minutes, SIU took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when consecutive singles by Sal Frisella, Toby Barnett and Greg Andrews gave the Dawgs runners in scoring position with two out. Andrews' single scored Frisella and Barnett trotted home on a balk for the quick two-run advantage.

SEMO, however, answered with three runs in the top of the second. RBI-doubles by Gary Gilbert and David Lawson spearheaded the charge which gave the Indians a 3-2 lead.

The Indians added to their lead in the top of the fourth which saw Seth Moulton hit a one-out single to start what turned out to be a three-run rally. Moments later, Fangman delivered a single with two away, before Stuckey crushed a homer to left to give SEMO what seemed to be a comfortable 6-2 cushion.

SEMO starter Jon Nourie struggled in the bottom of the fourth, issuing three walks and giving up a one-out single to designated hitter Erik Alvarez. Alvarez's hit, which was his first as a Saluki, scored Andrews. Following a Nick Baughman strikeout, Finigan stepped in and was robbed of a hit on Fangman's amazing snag.

Trailing 6-3, SIU cut SEMO's deficit to two, when Nathan Emrick hit into a fielder's choice to score Finigan who singled and moved to second on a Frisella hit. Despite the threat, the Salukis left two runners on base, and as a result, still trailed 6-4.

Stuckey was driven home on a single by Justin Christian in the top of the ninth which gave the Indians some insurance. Stuckey's run, however, was unearned, after he reached third on a passed ball by Barnett.

With two away in the bottom of the ninth, Barnett homered to left, but it was too late, as SEMO went on to post the 7-5 win.

Ryan Welch (0-3) continued to struggle for the Salukis on the mound this season. The native of Brentwood, Tenn., lasted just 3.2 innings in which he scattered eight hits and gave up six runs.

Offensively, SIU was led by Barnett, Frisella and Alvarez who each had two hits. Barnett, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, his team-leading fifth homer and two RBI. Meanwhile, Frisella went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Alvarez finished at 2-for-3 with a RBI. The Salukis were out-hit by the Indians, 12-9 on the day.

Stan Skakalski (1-0) earned a relief decision on the hill for the Indians. Skakalski replaced Nourie and threw a two-hitter with two strikeouts through 2.2 innings. James Beever, who struck out three in the last two innings of the game, picked up his third save of the season.

At the plate, SEMO was led by Moulton who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

SIU will return to league action this weekend when it hosts Illinois State in a four-game tilt beginning Friday at 2 p.m.
