CARBONDALE, Ill. - P.J. Finigan, Greg Andrews and Nathan Boldt each had three hits to lead Southern Illinois (10-19-1) to a 11-5 win over Murray State (8-23) earlier today in non-conference action at Abe Martin Field. SIU scored at least one run in eight of nine innings.
The win marked SIU's sixth straight against MSU. It was also the Salukis' second over the Thoroughbreds this season after last winning by a score of 22-6 on March 18.
Tied 2-2 after one and a half innings, SIU scored three runs in the bottom of the second and never let up.
Back-to-back two-out RBI-singles by Finigan and Nathan Emrick, to go along with a RBI-double compliments of Andrews extended the Dawgs' lead to 5-2.
Another run-scoring single by Emrick plated one run in the fourth and a single by Matt Brewer drove in a run in the fifth to up SIU's lead to 7-2.
Still not finished, Andrews ripped a two-RBI double off the wall in center to give the Salukis a seven-run lead in the sixth, before a Grant Gerrard single scored a run in the seventh and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Schooley pushed a run across in the eighth to make it 11-2, in favor of the Dawgs.
While SIU's offense was on cruise control, right-hander Ryan Welch was taking care of things on the mound. After giving up two runs on four hits in the first two innings, Welch settled down to hold MSU scoreless for the next four innings.
The Saluki bullpen would then allow three runs in the top of the ninth, which proved to be harmless, as SIU went on to post the 11-5 win.
Welch moved to 2-1 on the year after scattering seven hits and allowing two runs in six innings. He also struck out three batters.
Bart Peach (0-3) took the fall on the mound for MSU. He was touched for 12 hits and nine runs in six innings. He, too, registered three strikeouts.
Offensively, MSU (12) and SIU (15) combined for 27 hits.
Finigan went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored and a RBI. The triple marked Finigan's team-leading fourth of the season. Andrews and Boldt also went 3-for-5 on the day. Andrews, however, had two doubles, one run scored and three RBI, while Boldt had a double, one run scored and two RBI.
Four Thoroughbreds, including Clint Griggs, Scotty Scott, Jamie Leidolf and Austin Swain had two hits apiece to pace MSU.
SIU returns to conference play when it heads to league-leading and No. 11 Wichita State on Apr. 16-18. The four-game series opens Friday at 7 p.m.
