AUSTIN PEAY SERIES NOTES Southern Illinois leads the all-time series, 21-10. Last year, the two teams met for the first time since 2000 and split the two-game season series which each team winning one game at home. Southern Illinois has won nine of its last 13 games against the Governors. The Salukis will host APSU on Wednesday, April 16 at Itchy Jones Stadium.
SCOUTING THE GOVERNORS Austin Peay was picked to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference’s preseason poll. The Governors hosted Iowa this past weekend and dropped the first two games of the series before avoiding the sweep with a win in Sunday’s finale. Freshman utility man Ridge Smith was named OVC Player of the Week on Monday. He played third base, catcher and designated hitter over the weekend and hit .600 with four doubles and seven RBIs. Freshman pitcher Caleb Powell will make his first start for the Govs on the mound. He faced five batters and allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning of relief on Sunday against the Hawkeyes.
EFFECTIVE RELIEF SIU’s bullpen allowed only one earned run and two total runs in 13 innings of work in its opening weekend series at Western Kentucky. The Dawgs’ relievers began the season by allowing a single hit in 5.2 scoreless frames on Opening Day. Southern used eight relief pitchers in the three-game series, four of which are true freshmen.
KEEPING UP WITH JONES With a hit in each of the first three games to start the season, Matt Jones extended his hitting streak to nine games, dating back to last season. That is one hit shy of matching his career-best 10-game hitting streak, which he set from March 6-19, 2013. Jones also began the 2013 season with an eight-game hitting streak.
SAVES THE DRAY Tyler Dray became the seventh Saluki to record 10 career saves when he earned a save on Opening Day at Western Kentucky. It was his first save since 2012. Dray is tied with former Chicago White Sox pitcher Dewey Robinson for sixth all-time on SIU’s career list. With his next save, Dray will move into a fifth-place tie with Larry Beattie with 11 career saves. Dray’s Opening Day appearance also moved him ahead of Jake Alley into fourth place on SIU’s all-time list with 78 career appearances. He is three games away from tying Adam Snyder for third place.
